A PRACTICAL FIELD GUIDE

Make the next
check count.

Use these questions when a problem crosses teams, tools, or layers. Start with the user’s experience and keep a simple record of what you learn.

01 / DEFINE IT

What exactly fails?

Record the action, the expected outcome, the actual outcome, the exact time, and the people or devices affected.

02 / MAP IT

Where does the request go?

List the important stops and dependencies. Treat the first sketch as a hypothesis you will refine with evidence.

03 / COMPARE IT

What works, and what is different?

Find a known working case. Compare the account, device, connection, location, application, and timing.

04 / RECORD IT

What did each check answer?

Write the test, its result, what the result supports, and what the test did not cover.

05 / NARROW IT

What is the next unanswered question?

Choose a check that helps distinguish between plausible causes. Record the result before moving to another change.

06 / CLOSE IT

Did the user’s original action work?

Repeat the original failing action after an authorized change. Capture what changed and the evidence for the outcome.

RESULT → MEANING → NEXT QUESTION

Turn observations into useful evidence.

Example: a successful check still has a boundary.
ObservationWhat it supportsWhat to ask next
A colleague can open the app.The app worked for that colleague in that context. What differs for the affected user?
The status dashboard is green. The dashboard is reporting its monitored checks as healthy.Does it cover this user’s failing path?
The problem disappears after a change. The action succeeded after that change. What evidence connects the change to the cause?

A HANDOFF SOMEONE CAN USE

Tell the next team
where the trail ends.

“The app fails for three users on one floor. It works for those users on another connection. Here are the exact times, errors, and comparisons. We have not yet checked what differs between those two paths.”

That is a starting point the next team can investigate. Share relevant evidence through your organization’s approved channels and remove sensitive details.
